Now that I’m back into the swing of things with my workouts, my main goal is to crank through my workouts as fast as possible while doing what I can to torch major calories. The beauty of high-intensity circuit training is that in addition to the calories you burn during your workout, you actually increase your metabolism in the 24-48 hours post-workout as your body recovers and repairs itself.


While I’m still going a little easy on myself when it comes to high-impact exercises, I do want to make sure I’m pushing myself as hard as I can. That’s why this kettlebell routine is so great. Each circuit includes two minutes of kettlebell swings – a full-body exercise that requires intense core engagement and raises the heart rate – and eight minutes of basic strength training exercises. The combined effect is a workout that improves cardiovascular and muscular endurance while remaining relatively low-impact.


While you can do this workout with a dumbbell, I really would suggest using a kettlebell. The kettlebell’s unbalanced weight distribution actually requires you to work harder through each exercise, recruiting more muscles to effectively manage the tool’s weight.
